More stuff to buy

Before i forget, please use a headlamp instead of a torch light. The headlamp must enable you to see things clearly (for short range) and not far. If the salesman is trying to sell you something that enables you to see far far away, that is not the headlamp you want. You need to see what are you holding or grabbing hold of in the dark, so... short sighted headlamp.

Here are some luxurious item that you might want to spend on. These are UNNECESSARY but if you have the $$$, why not?!

add on spikes from Universal Travels (RM99)
I do not have a picture of this but its like a rubber thingy that you wrap around your shoes and there are spikes at the bottom, fits on any shoes for more grip

heat pack (RM4 till RM8)
these are disposable heat packs that you stick on your shirt and in your shoes for additional warmth. lasts about 5 hours. also, there is one where you hold it on your hands.

glow stick (below RM5)
just for fun

more updates coming up soon!

Not only stamina

A few of us when to Apek Hill last Saturday and I must say, that i had learned something from that trip.

The main thing, we have been worrying about is stamina but truth is, there are so many other things to worry about one of it is your knees. As we were descending, i felt a sharp pain on my knee and with wonders of google,

http://www.itendonitis.com/knee-tendonitis.html

Overuse of knees...

My advice, please remember to get knee support or any form of support that is required for any part of your bodies. (i mean ankle, elbow, wrist, whatever) =D

My knees are now wrapped in support even during work. Pray that i recover soon.

See you guys in ten days!

Updates from Jesmond!

The guys from Corezone gave us some tips:

Shoes/Boots:
Hard soles (tapak), water proof

Gloves:
Avoid using bulky snow gloves (comfy but not suitable for via ferrata).
Use warm and fitting gloves (kayak)

Jacket:
Water proof. Get a fleece too if possible. Do not underestimate the cold.

Water:
There is a water station at every 1km. Do not picture a water stall like your luxurious marathon runs. It's a natural water catchment, mini tangki thingy. Buy water purification tablets, do not challenge ur stomach during the climb.

Suitability of Kampung Adidas Shoes for Via Ferrata

Dear May Szin,

Thank you for your booking. Please check your itinerary at http://www.mountaintorq.com/index.php/activities-a-facilities

1) The renown "Kampung Adidas" shoes would be suitable to scale the circuit? Or a hardier pair of hiking shoes would be more suitable?
It is advisable to get good hiking shoes which you are comfortable with for the climb. Kampung Adidas is ok but if you're not used to it, it will cause blister. The best shoes are those with good grip, light and waterproof.

2) What kind of gears are most suitable? Winter clothing or just slightly thicker jackets?
You might need thicker clothing for the summit hike. As you descend the Via Ferrata, it may get warmer as the sun goes up. Best is to wear multiple layers which you can take off as you feel warmer.

Please find (FAQ and pre-trip notes) for you to prepare for the Mt Kinabalu trip. http://www.mountaintorq.com/index.php/important-information

Dear Sir/Madam,

My name is May Szin.
Please be informed that I have made a reservation for 26 pax on June 20, under Alan Lam of Skyland Adventure for Mountain Torq's Low's Peak's Circuit.

I was wondering if...

1) The renown "Kampung Adidas" shoes would be suitable to scale the circuit?
2) Or a hardier pair of hiking shoes would be more suitable?
3) What kind of gears are most suitable? Winter clothing or just slightly thicker jackets?

Please advice.
Would appreciate your suggestions/feedback.

Bukit Tabur is a hill located in Taman Melawati, Malaysia. It is also known locally as Bukit Hangus. The hill is very prominent and could be seen from the Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2. The hill, which is less than 1000 meters, is a quartz ridge. Climbers enter the hiking trail via Kampung Klang Gates, 50 meters from the gates of the Klang Gates Dam, at the back of Taman Melawati for a quick 3-4 hours climb. The Gombak Forest Reserve and Klang Gates Dam are beside the hill. The peak offers spectacular view of the dam.

Recce - Borneo Backpackers

Pros
  • 100% backpackers-styled accommodation
  • Located right smack in the city
  • Easily accessible to attractions like Filipino Market, Night Market, the Waterfront, shops, banks, etc
  • Suitable location for pick-up by agent for our rafting and climbing activities
  • Generally clean and cosy
  • Suggested rooms to book by Borneo Backpackers (first night deposit of RM 650 needed, if for 26 pax say yes):
    • 1 Large Dorm (10 beds) - female
    • 1 Medium Dorm (6 beds) - female
    • 1 Large Dorm (10 beds) - male
  • Free airport transfers (for arrival only) can be arranged
  • RM 25 per pax, per night x 3 nights = RM 75.00 per pax

 Cons
  • Common bathroom - limited available so there's definitely a need for waking up early to bath, to avoid 'congestion'
  • It's backpackers-styled, meaning... it cannot be compared to Tune Hotels (or any hotels for that matter) and the such in terms of room deco, etc
Some pictures for your viewing and judgement...

Accommodation Confirmation Required

Dear all,

Mayz had actually went to the extent of dropping by at Borneo Backpackers for a visit and this her post will be self explanatory.
*disclaimer from Mayz: this is strictly my opinion only
Before we proceed, we would like all of you to know that based on Mayz’s information as well as other information that we had collected, we have decided that the best accommodation will be, Borneo Backpackers.

However, please do allow me to say this. As organizers for this trip, we believe that it is our duty to make the trip easier, more fun and hassle free as you would not have to be worried about thinking or searching for a place to stay. Nonetheless, you are free to make your own decisions of where you would like to stay, for instance, friends / relatives place, your own preferred hotel, your own better rates hotel or even your more luxurious hotel as this is not a compulsory selection. You are free to decide on your own.

Our only request is that upon your selection, we are to meet at the rendezvous point at a designated time, which is Borneo Backpackers area, as the people from Skyland will be picking us up from there.

Finally, for those who are interested to accept this accommodation, please do email me at jesmond_cyk@hotmail.com and I shall have the rest of the arrangements made. Please do email me by 31st January 2010 as there would be neither email reminders nor persuasive messages to take this deal. Hence, I urge all of you to email me at the instant that you have made your decision. Instructions for payments will be forward to you upon having your confirmation.

I hope that this do not sound too harsh, if it does, I do apologize but as we have a large group of 26 people, I believe that certain arrangements will have to be done immediately.

Remember, we are only trying to make this trip easier and better for all of us.

Thank you and see all of you soonies for our training sessions!

Borneo Backpackers - Under Consideration

FYI, may consider Borneo Backpackers for our accommodation should they be able to give us a good price seeing our group size.

Pros:
  • Affordable - still pretty much within the budget
  • Located right smack in the KK city - no need to spend unnecessarily on taxi fares
  • Nearer to airport - should have free airport transfer (that's what it's stated on the website)
  • Easy pick-up area for activities - preferred pick-up location by agents
  • Inclusive of continental breakfast
Cons:
  • Common bathroom - don't know how many's available... inquiring, awaiting feedback

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Payment Breakdown

  • Mount KK (via Mesilau, end at Timpohon) + Via Ferrata (Low's Peak's Circuit) = RM 999.00
  • Padas White Water Rafting = RM 180.00
  • Hotel = should be ~ RM 59 (to be confirmed, may change venue too)

Note that, what you've transferred to me is only 70% payment of the package price.
Balance to be collected at a later date.
I will issue 'receipts' after this whole payment thingy is done...
Will be as transparent as possible.

I believe all have booked their own flight tickets... Those who have not, please do so asap!

For those who have yet to transfer me the required money, you have until tomorrow to do so.
Please and thank you :)

Cheers!

Travel Costs

To the fellowship of the climb,

Well, hate to break this to you but there will be additional costs on top of the payment that you have made or will make. Here are some of them that might wanna start saving for (the ones I can think of for now, more like a checklist).

1) Transfers (cab fares, bus fares) within the city, from the airport as the 1k that we have paid for is from the city right up till the end of the climb
2) Food and accommodation within the city (tentatively tune hotel)
3) Flight tickets
4) Equipment and gears (jacket, shoes, glove, headlamp)

One advice for sure, please do not underestimate the cold. We will have to get really thick warm jacket, good gloves (not gardening or skytrex gloves) and proper shoes. We will work on a checklist as we go on.

For now, I would say that we are good to go. So gear up, people!

Broga Hill Expedition

Dear all KK Hikers,

Upcoming this sunday (17th) will be our 1st assessment outing to Broga hills, Semenyih...
we shall meet up at BHP, Taman Connaught by 4 a.m....

pls arrange ur own transport, car pool if u have to as those who fail to turn up will be penalised RM10 as discussed during our first meeting... hehehe

- all proceeds from penalties will be an incentive/subsidy for all of us in Sabah... (pls comment on this particular rule as we have bout 24-26 ppl... 1 or 2 foreigner, 3 or 4 outstationer who might not make it)

Regards,
Gun

Accommodation, Luggage Storing Fees @ TuneHotels

Called TuneHotels.com...found out that we can actually store our luggage at their facilities (Hotel located right next to 1Borneo Shopping Mall) for RM 2 per luggage per day.
    So... RM 113.20 (for 3 nights stay) x 13 rooms (because got extra 1 boy, 1 girl) / 24 pax = ~ RM 62.00.

Pretty good deal, rather than renting the entire room for one night just to store your luggage while we're up spending the night at the mountain?

Also note that each room comes with their own bathroom. Better than staying in a condo with 8 - 12 pax, and only two toilets to use right?

If got any objections, please voice out... via e-mail / msn (mayszin@hotmail.com) or text (012-2659796)...

    Tasks

I believe, eventually, we organizers will need some help with the following...

    • Flight Tickets
      • Upon confirmation of package (meaning invoice is issued), we'll most prob need certain people to book their own flight tickets. Entirely up to you to choose what time you wanna fly-in and what time you wanna fly-out. Of course, those who's flying together could group up and make the bookings together...

    •  Payment
      • Discussed with our main agent - Alan from Skylandadventure.com... He'll need 70% of the full payment so that he can cover the payment that his company need to make to Mountain Torq for the KK Climb.
      • Therefore, as soon as invoice is issued, we'll let you know the payable amount, and swift online transfer must be made to either one of the organizers' bank account. Necessary bank account details will be provided when the time comes.

    •  Group Trainings
      • To those who agreed to having group trainings... well, your participation is of course of utmost importance. At the same time, we also need someone to take the initiative to organize certain activities... anyone who has any suggestions, please contribute.
      • 1st activity - Broga Hill @ January 17th, 2010. Up for it? Please comment here to confirm participation.
